Tommy Thorum
Thomas M. “Tommy” Thorum has been involved in competitive swimming for over 30 years. Tommy learned to swim, train, coach, and teach from his father, Tom Thorum Sr., who created one of the most successful summer swim programs in the state and country.
Tommy swam for Fort Douglas Country Club as an age group swimmer, which provided him with the unique and exceptional childhood experience of growing up in the country club swimming environment. In 1988, he coached and taught swimming at Salt Lake Country Club. Tommy was an East High School graduate and swimmer, and received the Erik Hoff award for leadership while at East. He went on to coach and to teach swimming at the Fort from 1989–1997. During this time, the Fort’s swim team was undefeated and trained multiple collegiate swimmers. In 1997, he served as head coach, aquatics director, and pool manager for Fort Douglas.
A University of Utah student and swimmer, Tommy served as team captain and led the Ute swim team to an undefeated season in 1994. In 1998, Tommy received master’s degree in architecture from the University of Utah, where he graduated with honors, including the Dean’s Prize and the Alpha Rho Chi Award for academic excellence, leadership, mentorship, and professionalism.
Among many other accomplishments in both professional and athletic arenas, Tommy is a five-time Ironman participant including two-time Ironman World Championship appearances (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run) in Kona, Hawaii. He led after the swim segment in the 2006 Hawaii Ironman and, in 2007, set the Brazil Ironman swim course record. He still holds one of the 3-fastest Ironman swim times in the event history. That same year, he led the first leg of the Hawaii Ironman World Championships and recorded the fastest swim time of the race, besting even the pros out of the water. Tommy also qualified for the venerable Boston Marathon.
Matt Farr
Matt Farr has been swimming ever since he was 6 years old — and it all started at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club. Matt started swimming competitively when he was 11 and continued through high school at Judge Memorial Catholic High School. Matt went on to attend the University of Puget Sound and helped UPS take 2nd place in the conference championship. Matt has been with the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club since 2002 and is looking forward to his 5th year as a swim coach and instructor.
Steven Hardy
Steven began swimming competitvely at the age of 11 for SYAC and the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club. While competing for the Tennis Club, he specialized in the backstroke and butterfly events, where he still holds numerous Conference records. Continuing into high school, Steven swam for East High where he helped lead the Leopards to two State Championship titles, winning four individual events (the 200 I.M. and 100 Butterfly twice) and five relay titles. As a Leopard, Steven also achieved Academic-All State and All-American status. After high school, Steven attended the University of California-San Diego where he majored in Economics. While attending UCSD, Steven competed all four years for the Tritons swim team becoming a nine-time All-American at the Divison II level. This is Steven’s 2nd year as a coach for the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club.
Nick Philpot
Nick was a scholarship athlete on the University of Utah Swimming and Diving Team for all four years (2004-2008) and was a Mountain West Conference finalist in the 400 yard I.M. Other primary events included the 200 I.M., 200 Breastroke, and 200 Free. Prior to swimming at Utah, Nick was a four-time Utah 4A State Champion in the 100 and 200 Freestyle and school record-holder/team captain for East High School. Nick also trained and competed for Steiner Youth Aquatics Club (SYAC).
Nick began swimming for the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club in 1993 at the age of 7 and finished 10 years later at 17. He’s the current Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club and Conference record holder in Breastroke, Freestyle, and I.M. This is Nick’s 4th year as a swim coach / instructor at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club (2004, 2005, 2009, 2010). Nick will be attending medical school in the fall.
Kelsey Tannehill
As an Oregon State University graduate in Communication, Kelsey has 16 years of competitive swimming. While swimming at Oregon State, Kelsey specialized in backstroke events as well as sprint freestyle. During high school, Kelsey helped lead her team to 3 consecutive state championships, and in 2005, qualified for YMCA Short Course Nationals.
Even now, Kelsey can be found in some body of water, whether it be a pool, the ocean, a river, or a lake. But her true passion for swimming now lies in helping others–through coaching–find the excitement, as well as success, that swimming has to offer.
Annie Van Leeuwen
Annie has been swimming for 10 years and currently a member of the University of Utah Swim Team and will be University of Utah the team’s captain next year. Starting with her sophomore year in college, she taught swim lessons for the Pirate Swim Club and then served as a counselor at Pine Crest Swim Camp in Florida. There, she organized activities, taught swim lessons, and coached children from the ages of 7-17. Annie is graduated this spring from the U with a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family studies with a focus on the development of children.
Annie holds spots on University of Utah’s All-Time Top 10 Performers lists in 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, and 100 Breastroke.
Tricia Bowen
Tricia has been a prominent part of the diving community for the last 13 years. She began diving at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club at age 8, competed at the Junior National level with SLAP diving from the age of 10 to age 18, and spent 3 years with collegiate diving at Brigham Young University. During her high school years, she was a high school state diving champion and received an All-American recognition. She has five years of coaching experience, including three at the Club. During those years, the diving team won the Country Club Conference Championships. Tricia loves working with children and is excited to be at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club.
