I. Tennis Program Mission
The mission of the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club’s tennis program is to provide our members with the best opportunity to learn the sport of tennis or to improve upon their current tennis skills in a fun and safe environment. We will offer our members classes at every skill level-from beginners to tournament players-and give them the ability to enhance their physical strength, mental health, and overall conditioning.
II. Junior Development Tennis Program Description
Our summer Junior Development Tennis Program is designed to teach our students solid tennis fundamentals. The emphasis will be to give each of our students a strong technical foundation and build sound stroke production. We want to give our students the best opportunity to be successful as soon as possible on the tennis court. We will offer nine one-week sessions from June through August. Our sessions will provide stroke development, point play, strategy, mental training, and physical conditioning. Students may sign up for as many sessions as they would like.
In addition to our summer program, the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club offers private, semi-private, and group lessons, as well as a year round Junior Development Tennis Program. Regardless of a players’ experience or ability, our outstanding staff of teaching professionals will work hard to help each student improve their skills, reach their individual goals, and acquire an interest for the lifelong sport of tennis.
2010 Summer Junior Development Tennis Program
The Junior Development Tennis Program offers summer programs for children 5-18 years old and for individuals of varying abilities. These groups meet for instruction, practice, and competition. All classes are limited to 30 students, ensuring a 6 to 1 student to tennis professional ratio.
Junior Development Tennis Classes
Senior Elite (Monday & Wednesday, 1 - 2:30 pm)
Ranked Juniors and High School Varsity Players (14-18 years old)
This class is comprised of our top level juniors. Players in this class have already spent many hours on the court developing their game. They have sound technical foundations and have the ability to win points with multiple weapons. Players in this class compete in local, sectional and national tournaments on a regular basis. Ongoing commitment to and participation in tournaments is a requirement of this class.
Academy (Tuesday & Thursday, 1 - 2:30 pm)
High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Players (14-18 years old)
Players in this class are starting to take their tennis more seriously. They no longer want to just play tennis - they want to become better tennis players. The focus of our Academy class is to make sure each student’s stroke production is sound and fundamentally correct. This class will prepare students to play on their high school team and in local and sectional tournaments. It will also prepare them for our Senior Elite class.
Junior Elite (Tuesday & Thursday, 1 - 2:30 pm)
Advanced Intermediate to Advanced Players (9-13 years old)
This class is for our younger junior players who are serious about their games. Players in this class have already spent many hours on the court developing their skills. They already have a strong foundation in terms of stroke production but still need some fine tuning. They are developing their understanding of court positioning and strategy. These players compete regularly in local, sectional and national tournaments. Ongoing commitment to and participation in tournaments is a requirement of this class.
Flight (Monday - Thursday, 10:30 am -12 noon)
Beginner to Intermediate Players
(Ages 7-13)
This class is for beginner to intermediate players who have played for less than 3 years. Students are divided into ability levels within the group (ability first, age second) and are taught the fundamentals of the game. At this stage we emphasize proper grips and swing paths for the forehand, backhand, volley, serve and overhead. Our goal in this class is to make our students’ stroke production technically sound. We will also introduce our students to the basic rules of tennis.
Stars (Monday - Thursday, 9:30 am -10:30 am)
Beginners
(Ages 5 & 6)
Having fun and developing a love of the game is the primary focus at this stage. We want our students to develop gross motor skills such as running, catching, jumping, and balance to help prepare them for our next class. A child who wants to play at this level may not be interested in repetitive drills. We will teach proper swings in a fun way. In this class, the teaching professionals are energetic and keep the atmosphere playful.
Our teaching professionals will place all players in the appropriate class within our program. The Club’s professionals retain the right to make class level adjustments based on attitude, performance, and dedication.
